To apply for a carrier code, the following steps are required:

    1. Determine the Type of Code: Decide whether you need a non-bonded or bonded carrier code. Non-bonded carriers must have shipments released at the first port of arrival (FPOA) in Canada, while bonded carriers can transport goods beyond the FPOA.
    2. Create an Account: Register for an account in the CBSA Assessment and Revenue Management (CARM) Client Portal (CCP).
    3. Complete the Application: Fill out the carrier code application in the CCP.
    4. Submit Required Documents: Provide necessary documents, including a customs bond if applying for a bonded carrier code.
    5. Transmit Advance Commercial Information (ACI): Once you receive your carrier code, apply to transmit ACI to the CBSA and undergo the testing process.
    6. Obtain Bar-Coded Labels: Within 30 days of receiving the carrier code, obtain bar-coded labels for shipments.

The CBSA processes applications on a first-come, first-served basis, and it typically takes up to three business days to issue a carrier code once all required information is received.
